Matters are where your client work lives. A matter is a project with the legal sections enabled.
How it works
Any project can be a matter. When its Legal Matter field is set to Yes, the file appears under Matters, All Matters, and picks up the legal sections described below. Left at No, it stays a plain project, which is handy for internal work that has tasks and time but no court file.
Because a matter is still a project underneath, everything you would expect keeps working: tasks, timesheets, discussions, and billing all behave the same way.
What a matter tracks
| Section | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Firm & court | Your firm file number, the court file number, the court or tribunal, court level, registry details, and a virtual hearing link. |
| Representation & other party | Details of representation on the file and the other party. |
| Conflict check | Who ran the check, whether it is completed, the date and time, the result and outcome, notes, and any related matters. |
| Retainer, billing & ID | Fee arrangement, retainer amounts and dates, billing preferences, and ID verification. |
Court dates and appearances
Each court date carries an appearance type: Trial, Hearing, Voir Dire, Family Management Conference (FMC), Case Management Conference (CMC), Judicial Case Conference (JCC), Collaborative Meeting, Desk Order, or Nominal Commencement Hearing.
You never maintain a "next appearance" by hand. It is worked out from the matter's upcoming court dates and shows the date, time, and appearance type, so the answer to "when are we in court next?" is always current.
Client type
Every matter records how it is funded: Private, Legal Aid, or Pro Bono. Choosing Legal Aid reveals extra intake fields for the details that only apply to legal aid files.
Expecting to see a file in All Matters and it is not there? Check its Legal Matter field. Only files marked Yes show up in the matters list.
